Apple Day - 2011 - Friday, October 14th & Saturday, 15th, 2011 Introduction Handout Letter, July 2011 Note: A Printable version of the 2011 Apple Day Introduction Handout can be found on the Apple Day Documents web page. Background: According to Scouts Canada National Site, Apple Day started in St. John, New Brunswick in 1932 as a Thank You for supporting Scouting activities. Another source states that it started in Toronto in 1936. At first, apples were given out as a Thank You for the support that various Scouting groups had received. Since the 1930’s, Apple Day has grown across Canada and has become a fall tradition that many of the members of the public remember from their days in scouting. We do not sell apples. We give the apple as a thank you for the donation to scouting. In Hamilton-Wentworth, the entire area/region has coordinated their efforts since 1944. It is as simple as this. If your group participates in the Apple Day campaign, the group will get free camping at Mount Nemo Scout Camp for that entire year. All receipts minus expenses go directly to the camp fund for maintenance of Mount Nemo and Ragged Falls Scout Camps. Benefits: The actual cost for the use of the buildings at Mount Nemo ranges from a high of $405 per weekend for BP Lodge to a low of $315 per weekend for other buildings. The use of BP Lodge for one night would cost $205. In addition to the gain from free camping for the year, Apple Day provides the youth in Scouting a chance to take ownership of their activities. All youth members that participate in Apple Day have a tangible symbol that they can make a difference. We need the help of every youth and parent to build up our donations. Many of the citizens in the of Hamilton Area still remember their experiences as cubs and scouts at Mount Nemo. We just have to ask for the donation and they will be happy to support our youth. Plan to come out not just on Friday night but again on Saturday morning and afternoon. The goal for the 2011 campaign is $70,000 but to reach that level, we need your participation.
Montana’s Cookhouse is proud to announce that Hamilton Wentworth Area Scouts have joined Montana’s Sponsorship program at Upper James, Ancaster & Red Hill locations. What is the Sponsorship Program? This program is designed to help local sports teams, businesses or organized groups earn cash back as they dine at Montana’s. 10% of the before tax spending is given back to each team. 5% is given back monthly and the other 5% is used for an end of year party. How is this 10% calculated? After you’ve finished your meal and paid you take your receipt and drop it in the Sponsorship box located at the main entrance. You will find a plaque with “Scouts Canada” on it. This is the drop box you place your receipt in. At the end of each month a manager from Montana’s will add up all the submitted receipts and calculate the 10% (before tax) payout. Who can submit a receipt? Anyone and Everyone! Any Scouts Canada member, or their family, friends or acquaintances can add their receipt to the Sponsorship Drop Box. There is no limit to the number of submitted receipts. Anytime, all year round, any day of the week, enjoy lunch, dinner, or a late night snack and at the same time add to the total amount of the monthly payout. The more you visit the 3 Montana’s locations the more money Mount Nemo Scout Camp earns.
At each of the 3 Montana’s Cookhouses in the Hamilton/Ancaster/ Stoney Creek Area, bird houses are set up near the entrance. These bird houses have 10 holes with the 2 top holes designated to Camp Nemo Scout Camp. The remaining 8 holes can be used by any Hamilton Wentworth Group who takes their group badge to the Cookhouse manager and fills in the contact information. Plexiglass covers for the badges can be bought at Westcliffe Home Hardware through Tom Morrow. Diners can put their paid food bills in the slots supporting Camp Nemo or any of the groups shown. At the end of each month, the manager will tally the amounts and the recipients will receive 5% immediately and the remaining 5% at the end of the Scouting year. Pass the word to your group, families, friends and co-workers and encourage them to support Hamilton Wentworth Scouting as they dine at Montana’s Cookhouses.
From Saturday, October 8 to Saturday October 15 2011, Montana’s will donate $1 from the sale of each Apple Cobbler dessert purchased to the Hamilton Wentworth Area Apple Day Campaign. Not only will Montana’s again be supplying “Kid’s Eat Free” coupons, but also, “Free Appetizer” coupons for the bigger kids!. We expect these to be available as hand outs for a shift well done and perhaps also as a downloadable coupon. And, on Saturday October 15, between 11:00am to 4:00pm, Montana’s will donate a portion of sales to our Apple Day Campaign. Logos and text are available to add to any group’s website to promote and take advantage of this generosity. Contact Gary Fliss: appleday2011@gmail.comTell your friends, Tell your group, the more people that can go to Montana’s, the more we’ll get back for our camps! - (copied from October 01st Scouters Dispatch) The 2011 Apple Day Campaign takes place on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15. Our goal this year is $70,000. This goal is ambitious but can be met and even exceeded if we have maximum participation from our youth, leaders and parents. This year we have additional support from our friends at Montana’s Cookhouse. Please see ads regarding Montana’s and Apple Day. Leaders, you are the key to the success of our campaign in promoting full participation for youth and their parents, not only for one “shift” - for all shifts. To encourage this kind of commitment, one ballot towards the annual prize draw will be given for each two hour volunteer period. This is for youth, leaders and parents. Proceeds from our Apple Day Campaign are used to maintain and upgrade Scouting facilities at Mount Nemo Scout Camp and Ragged Falls Canoe Base. Usage of Camp Nemo and Ragged Falls is still no charge for Hamilton Wentworth Area groups that participate in Apple Day and we hope we can continue that tradition with your support. Contacts:
