Apple Day 2010 - October 15th and 16th 2010

Apple day is Scouting's most visible fun raising activity. Every October youth from all programs involved in Scouting flock out in uniform to area malls, shopping centres and stores, loaded down with bushels of apples to exchange for donations to Scouting. In the Hamilton-Area all of the proceeds from Apple Day go toward funding the operation of Mount Nemo Scout Camp and Ragged Falls Scout Camp.

Please offer your support when you see a scout out with his basket of apples.

Apple Day 2009

Slow Economy limits Success of 2009 Campaign

I would just like to thank everyone for the great effort given this year to make Apple Day the success that it was. The slow economy had a negative impact on our returns this year. Based on comments that I received from several areas, I think that we could have reached much higher if we had had better participation from some scouting groups. However, there were areas of great participation such as the 1st Binbrook and the three groups who covered the Meadowlands Power Centre. The low participation in other areas requires more study to see if we as organizers can improve how Apple Day is presented to the youth and their parents. I was able to get around to most of the depots on Friday. It is great to see our youth, parents and leaders in action. It was bitterly cold at the Centre Mall but I did see one Cub standing in front of the Shopper’s Drug Mart in the afternoon and again later in the evening. It is this kind of dedication that we need to spread to others to make the campaign a success. I would like to commend the members of the Apple Day Committee. Once again, they showed a high degree of effort and performance under the circumstances in planning and placing youth members in many different locations. Many of these members have been there for the entire seven year span that I was Apple Day Chairman. I would also like to praise the effort and commitment of all of the youth, parents and leaders who helped this year. Without your commitment as an entire area, this campaign would fall apart. That commitment spreads to everyone that you deal with in scouting. This year’s results are as follows:

We must thank our community for their generosity; the local media for helping us publicize this event, and the many businesses including Ancaster Power Centre, Ancaster Costco, Ancaster Wal-Mart, LCBO District 21 and Eastgate Mall who allowed us to canvass on their premises. Many businesses in the new malls at the east end of Hamilton Mountain and in Ancaster allowed our youth to canvass this year. I would also like to extend my thanks to Home Hardware – Westcliffe Mall for donating the Bike and helmet and the sleeping bag and pad. This is the 3rd straight year that Home Hardware has made these prizes available for our draw. Congratulations to Stuart Savickes of the 47th Hamilton Cubs who won this year’s bike and Kevin of the 4th Ancaster Scouts who won the sleeping bag and mattress In my final year (really, this is my final year), I would like to give many thanks also to the volunteers who over the last seven years spend Apple Day at Scout House counting money, the Scouting Auxiliary for feeding everyone their world famous turkey dinner and many others who I have not mentioned. Without the commitment of all of you, this campaign would not be the success that it is.
