“75 Years – An Amazing Journey”

Saturday, May 25th, 2013

We are very proud that 2013 will be the 75th anniversary of this amazing event.  Not surprisingly, this year’s theme is “75 Years – An Amazing Journey”.  The Guides and Scouts are being challenged to plan fun and imaginative ways to demonstrate to the community 75 reasons why they enjoy being a Scout or Guide.

We have some special plans to make the 75th Parade an extra special event, including more antique vehicles, bands, and public participation.  Can you help us?  We would like to see at least one group from each sub-area pick one item from their “75 Reasons We Enjoy Scouting” list and present it in the Parade.  It could be your campfire blankets, singing camp songs, the Jungle Book, or your favourite craft.   Obviously, your imaginations are far better than mine.  Are you up to the challenge?

The first parade was held in conjunction with the Eaton’s Good Deed Radio Club on Saturday, April 15th, 1939.  After an entertaining show in the Capital theatre, approx. 1,500 Cubs, Scouts and Rovers smartly marched along John, King and James Streets, past a saluting base in front of the Eaton’s store.  That single event evolved into the longest running, and often largest, youth parade in North America, and has attracted not only local but national attention.

As part of this anniversary, we would like to put together a brief history, with personal memories, photos, and memorabilia. We are asking for your help in locating anything Parade related, especially pre 1960’s. Can you help by writing a short paragraph on your personal Parade memories and experiences?  Do you have any physical Parade memorabilia, such as crests, plaques, awards or photos?

If you have anything that may be of special interest, please drop them off at Scout House, clearly identified and labelled “Kevin Thur - Parade History”.  All items will be copied and documented, then returned to you, unless you wish them donated to the Hamilton Scout Archives.

Alternatively, you can e-mail them to: gkthur@cogeco.ca.   Thank you!
