Venturer Scouts is a program designed for youth 14 to 17 years of age and it shares the Aim of Scouts Canada with Scoutings other programs. This aim is to help children, youth and adults to develop their character as resourceful and responsible members of the community by providing opportunities and guidance for their mental, physical, social and spiritual development. Details of the Venturer Scout program are contained in The Canadian Venturer Handbook and The Venturer Advisors' Handbook. With this emphasis in mind, a Venturer Advisor(s), recruited by the sponsor, works with the company to provide a wide range of projects and activities. The advisor(s) may consist of parents and other adults. Venturer Scouts may be involved in the selection of their advisor(s). Venturers may attend weekly meetings in a group called a company which usually has from 5 to 8 members. Only occasionally does a company have 12 or more members. It is desirable to also have both male and female advisors if the company is co-educational. The company elects an executive to handle administrative functions chairman, secretary, treasurer. Any member may be appointed as leader for activities or projects. To be invested into Venturers one must, among other requirements, know and understand the promise. The Venturer Scout Promise The Venturer Scout Motto Many Venturer Scout activities place great emphasis on living and learning in the outdoors in harmony with nature and the environment. There are few Venturer Scout badges or awards. Venturer Scouts can earn, if they wish, recognition by qualifying for adult recognition such as the St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid certificate. Venturer Scout companies tend to remain small. It is acceptable for a company to come into existence and die in three years when its members leave. Other companies can be formed in the group each with its own cycle. Vocational oriented companies, such as Police Venturing and Fire Service Venturing are increasingly popular. |
